What is the C#maj7 chord?

The C#maj7 chord (C# major 7th) is a major 7th chord built from four notes: C#, E#, G#, B# — the 1–3–5–7 of the C# scale, 4 semitones and 7 semitones and 11 semitones above the root. On guitar it is most often played as a movable shape from fret 4 (x-4-6-5-6-4); shift all fretted notes together to transpose it along the neck. It is rated intermediate. A soft, jazzy chord heard all over neo-soul and bossa. Below you will find step-by-step fingering, 3 positions up the neck, audio of every shape, and the real progressions this chord lives inside.

How do you play the C#maj7 chord on guitar?

Fret 4 barre — a movable shape, so this same fingering works for every root note.

C#maj7frets x-4-6-5-6-4
  1. Lay your index finger flat across the A to high E strings at fret 4, rolled slightly onto its bony edge.
  2. Press the D string at fret 6 with your ring finger.
  3. Press the G string at fret 5 with your middle finger.
  4. Press the B string at fret 6 with your pinky finger.
  5. Start your strum on the A string and do not play the low E string at all.
If it will not ring yet

Leave out the lowest fretted note (A string) and practise the remaining strings. The bass changes, and the upper strings may still need a smaller barre; check that the third and other colour tones stay clear. x-x-6-5-6-4

How do you make C#maj7 sound clean?

The mistake everyone makes

C#maj7 is the C# barre you already know with the third string dropped from the 6th to the 5th fret, which swaps a doubled root for the major seventh (B#, which sounds as C). Left barred, the chord never floats.

The drill that fixes it

C# → C#maj7 → C#7 from the same 4th-fret barre (x-4-6-6-6-4 → x-4-6-5-6-4 → x-4-6-4-6-4). One string, two frets, three chord types.

Because nothing rings open, you can move this whole shape to any fret and it keeps the same quality — only the letter name changes.

A single bar covers the rest of the strings here. If the inside strings stay dead, move the bar a millimetre closer to the fret wire before you try pressing harder.

Every note here is fretted, which means the shape transposes anywhere on the neck without changing your fingers.

The barre is the only hard part of this shape. Keep the bar finger straight and use the weight of your arm rather than the grip of your thumb.

The theory behind C#maj7

C#maj7 is spelled C# – E# – G# – B# — the 1 – 3 – 5 – 7 of the C# scale, which is the root plus 4 semitones, 7 semitones, 11 semitones. A soft, jazzy chord heard all over neo-soul and bossa.

The major seventh sits a semitone under the octave, which is why it sounds soft rather than tense. On guitar it is usually the highest fretted note, so it is also the first note to disappear if your finger rolls off.

C#maj7 chord FAQ

What notes are in a C#maj7 chord?
C#, E#, G#, B# — the 1–3–5–7 of the C# scale, or the root plus 4 semitones, 7 semitones, 11 semitones. A soft, jazzy chord heard all over neo-soul and bossa.
Is C#maj7 a hard chord to play?
C#maj7 is rated intermediate on this site. There is 1 barre to hold down, and beginners lose the inner strings first. Roll the index finger onto its side, bring the elbow in and fret close behind the wire — that is a position fix, and it usually takes a few weeks of short daily attempts rather than one long session. If the shape will not ring, move it up a few frets first — the frets are narrower higher up the neck, so the stretch is easier there while you learn the shape.
