D blues scale

The D blues scale is the minor pentatonic plus the blue note (♭5), one extra semitone carrying all the tension and release of the blues. Best for blues, rock and country lead lines.

The D blues scale is the six notes D, F, G, Ab, A and C. Read as scale degrees from D, that is 1, ♭3, 4, ♭5, 5, ♭7. Every note is a fixed distance from the one before it: m3-W-H-H-m3-W, where W is a whole step (2 frets) and H is a half step (1 fret), and m3 is three frets. That pattern is the whole scale. Move it so the root lands on a different note and you are playing that key's blues scale. Having only six notes, it fits a narrow set of chords: any triad built entirely from D, F, G, Ab, A and C sits under it without clashing. On the guitar this is not one shape but overlapping positions: the lowest D sits at fret 0 on the D string. 5 of the 80 song sheets charted here are in Dm / F.

This scale is the D minor pentatonic scale with one note added, the flat 5th (Ab). Slide into it or bend through it, but do not sit on it: the pull back to A is the whole sound.

How to practise the D blues scale

  1. Frets 0 to 4, slowly. The position above, up and back, naming every note out loud. Naming is what turns a shape into a scale.
  2. Then find the next D: A string, fret 5. Build the same shape from there and play root to root at 60 BPM, one note per beat.
  3. Then stop counting. Pick a song in Dm / F from the list below and improvise on these notes for two minutes. That is what the scale is for.
